When these drivers are running the following will be displayed in Apple System Profiler under the USB subheading: USB-Serial Controller: Version: 3.00 Bus Power (mA): 500 Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc. The drivers I use are freely available with the GPL licence at. The answer is fairly simply if you happen to use the prolfic PL2303 drivers for the MAC. Hello Everyone, I have succeded with this problem. I hope this info can be of use to someone.

However, if you need to use it natively under OSX also, look elsewhere or wait to see if future updates of the open-source osx-pl2303 driver and/or Fusion eventually work together.

It's relatively easy to find and works well.

If you need a USB<->Serial adapter for use with your guest VMs exclusively, consider the Radio Shack adapter.

I'm not comfortable recommending a hack on another company's driver and the fact that you'd be messing with the innards of an installed kernel extension on your system. Is there a way to get this driver to work anyway? I'd rather not say. The result is that Fusion can't grab it for use under the guest VMs. My guess is the driver is preventing Fusion from unloading/disabling it from the OSX side. I don't know if this is a bug in the driver itself or in Fusion. The problem with this driver is that once installed, Fusion can't seem to get access to the adapter when it needs to. The open-source driver osx-pl2303 (at 0.3.1) does recognize the Radio Shack adapter cable and does allow it to work natively under OSX. The generic OSX driver on the Prolific website (v1.2.1r2) won't recognize it because Radio Shack uses their own USB Vendor/Product IDs in their versionī. Although it uses a standard PL-2303 chipset, neither of the following work (as of the date of this post):Ī.

Radio Shack only includes Windows drivers with this adapter.Ģ. The issue is that currently there are no OSX drivers available for this adapter that work properly alongside Fusion.ġ. However, if you expect to use it natively under OSX at times, then you may want to look elsewhere. Just plug in the adapter and let the guest VMs work with it.

If you ONLY need to use it from within a Fusion VM, then no problem - don't install anything on OSX itself. Please read that again before you consider purchasing this cable. I can also confirm that it works fine with OpenBSD 4.2 (/dev/ttyU0) There's a good chance that any other Linux/*BSD distro that recognizes the Prolific PL-2303 chipset may work also. However, I can confirm that it works fine with a Win2k VM which installs it under COM3 and supports speeds up to 115kbps. There is another slightly more expensive version (cat#26-949) that supposedly does work with Vista, but I have no firsthand info on this. It includes drivers for Win 9x/ME/2k/XP, but not Vista. If you live in the U.S., there's probably one nearby. For personal reasons I'm not that fond of Radio Shack, but the fact is that their stores are in shopping malls all over the place. This adapter cable (cat#26-183) is readily available in Radio Shack stores for around $30(US). Note that this adapter comes with one important caveat (below).

I've used this USB<->Serial adapter successfully with Fusion 1.1.2 (on a MBP 2.2G/10.5.2) with Win2k and OpenBSD guest VMs. usb serial controller d for mac usb serial controller d for mac

it doesn't appear to support anything about 115kbps), however I thought I'd attach some info to this post since anyone searching the forum for a RS-232/serial solution would probably come across this thread. NOTE: The Radio Shack adapter I'm about to describe does NOT satisfy the orig.
